It was the moment Todd Scott knew the push for more pathways and trails in Detroit was worth the hard work.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt just happened on its own. We didn\u2019t have to be involved at all. We just provided the infrastructure and the magic happened from others,\u201d said Todd, executive director of the Detroit Greenways Coalition. <\/a><\/p>\n [[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”4370″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”540″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”960″}}]]<\/p>\n Todd started working with the coalition in 2008 when government dollars were available to build trails around the city. He says it was a natural career transition, having previously worked with the Michigan Mountain Biking Association.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve been into biking seriously for a long time\u2014since childhood. When this became available with the Greenways alliance, I jumped on it, because I loved riding in Detroit.\u201d<\/p>\n Now there\u2019s upwards of 240 miles of bike routes, lanes and trails in the city. To say the bike scene has exploded in Detroit over the past decade is an understatement. <\/p>\n [[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”4371″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”540″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”960″}}]]<\/p>\n Photo courtesy Detroit Greenways Coalition<\/u><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cNo one saw the bike club scene coming in Detroit,\u201d said Todd. \u201cWe had a handful in the beginning and now there are over 60 bike clubs in Detroit.\u201d<\/p>\n The clubs, he says, are diverse with members sharing a passion for the city and the art of the slow roll.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are the center of black bike culture in America,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re like the Wakanda in the bike world because no one assumes Detroit is this advanced, doing things the right way.\u201d<\/p>\n The scene, he said, isn\u2019t traditional and you find both men and women riding incredible DIY bikes equipped with sound systems\u2014inviting people in the neighborhoods out to join. <\/p>\n [[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”4372″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”540″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”960″}}]]<\/p>\n Photo courtesy Detroit Greenways Coalition<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n Velma Massey, 60, started riding about seven years ago. She hit the streets with the Grown Men On Bikes club before Grown Ladies On Wheels was established in 2014.<\/p>\n “I like the exercise and meeting people…so many wonderful people, so many different people of culture,” said Velma.<\/p>\n She started out with one bike and now she has seven. Her most popular ride was inspired by Tweety Bird.<\/p>\n [[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”4373″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”540″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”960″}}]]<\/p>\n Photo courtesy Velma Massey<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n Velma said everyone just does their own style and comes together in the city.<\/p>\n “Everybody comes to Detroit to ride, because people in Detroit have a real passion for riding and when you get on a bike, it\u2019s just a whole other world,” she said.<\/p>\n Detroit, Todd said, is one of the top U.S. cities for building bike infrastructure like the Joe Louis Greenway that connects nearby communities.<\/p>\n \u201cThere are so many possibilities, the beauty of Detroit, they have a great street grid, you can go anywhere,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not difficult to choose a route, you stumble along and discover things.\u201d <\/p>\n [[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”4374″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”540″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”960″}}]]<\/p>\n Photo courtesy Detroit Greenways Coalition<\/u><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n But there\u2019s always more work to be done.<\/p>\n As the greenways expand, the main challenges, Todd said, are maintenance and resident displacement. The goal moving forward is to find a way to tie affordable housing with greenway development.<\/p>\n \u201cOften advocates try to sell biking and trails by saying they will raise property values, but for people renting that\u2019s not a good thing. It\u2019s more of a concern,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n [[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”4375″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”540″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”960″}}]]<\/p>\n Photo courtesy Detroit Greenways Coalition<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n Despite the challenges, Todd said there\u2019s something about biking that is good for the soul.<\/p>\n \u201cIt wakes you up, allows you to see things you wouldn\u2019t normally see,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can change your route more easily, stop and say hello to people.
