Where do you gain inspiration? <\/strong><\/p>\n

I tend to pull directly from my environment. Detroit is rich with inspiration. This fall has been really blustery and vibrant and kind of a melancholy vibe – so I’ve been playing with deeper scents like amber and myrrh. Right now, I’m working on a small line of perfume oils. I imagine the line being for this sophisticated, bohemian female archetype so anytime I encounter a woman who I think fits that mold – I tend to grill them on their scent preferences and personal style. <\/p>\n

What\u2019s the most rewarding part of your making process?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Playing with scents is definitely my favorite part of the process.  I’m also obsessed with packaging right now. I’m not totally focused on aesthetic in my own life. I’m a throw on a pair of jeans and tee shirt, and maybe brush my hair, kind of girl. So it took me a minute to figure out how to dress my products. But now that I’m into it – I’m really into it.<\/p>\n

How did you come up with Canfield Cedar (the special scent you crafted for Willys Detroit?)<\/strong><\/p>\n

A lot of trial and error. I think I made almost twenty different scents before I got it down to the final one. Willys was my first wholesale account and to this day only custom scent, so it has a very special place in my heart\u2026to this day, it’s one of my favorite candles. It’s earthy and sweet and verdant. <\/p>\n

How do you measure your own success? Do you set goals? Just gauge by how you feel? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Success is a complicated thing. Ideally, I think you can measure it in direct proportion to happiness. But I am extremely goal oriented, and sometimes those goals are lofty and they take time and I get impatient and frustrated. Success is about forward momentum. As long as I’m moving forward – I’m successful. <\/p>\n
