A JOURNAL BY SHINOLA DEDICATED TO JOY OF CRAFT

Three Words On Motherhood

BY Taylor Rebhan

I was more than a week overdue at the end of July and at my wit’s end with the scorching summer heat.

The best remedy for moody me: shopping.

Overpreparing is my game, a curse of the Type A nature. But right then and there, in the haircare aisle, I was completely unequipped to start going into labor. I had convinced myself it would be a scheduled induction and that was that.

I was thinking about my packed hospital bag inconveniently sitting in our home 30 minutes away as I kindly cut off the sweet saleswoman to apologize for the awkward turn of events.

I glanced at my husband, who is normally calm and collected, to see his wide eyes comically staring back at me.

One-hundred dollars’ worth of beauty products later (we didn’t want to ghost after leaving bodily fluid on their floor), I was on my way to the hospital.

From the start, I think my daughter, Lucy, wanted me to know that a big part of motherhood is about accepting the fact that things don’t always go according to plan.

Being a mother is a blessing and one of the greatest joys of my life. It’s fun, and—at times—chaotic, terrifying and messy, but always worth every minute.

While it’s nearly impossible to sum up all the emotions of being a mother in 1,000 words, some of the wonderful women at Shinola took a crack at writing down their top three. Check out their selections below.

Tweet your three words on motherhood to @Shinola and we’ll post them on the Journal.
