Fathers hold an irreplaceable role in shaping our lives, imparting invaluable lessons, and leaving an indelible mark on our hearts. Fathers play a pivotal role in our journey of self-discovery and personal growth, from their unwavering love to their shared wisdom. In this exploration, we delve into the profound influence of fathers and the enduring legacy they leave behind.
As Joseph Humphreys, Shinola’s Product Development Manager, spent countless hours in the shop with his own father, he realized that fathers occupy a unique space as both parent and friend. “I see he was there for me as my Dad and my buddy,” Humphreys reflects. In these moments of camaraderie, a bond forms that surpasses the traditional parent-child relationship, creating a deeper connection.

Craftsmanship, purpose, and a strong work ethic are among the values they frequently pass on to us.
Craftsmanship, purpose, and a strong work ethic are among the values that fathers frequently pass on to their children. Shinola’s Product Development Associate Charles Hines remembers his father’s simple yet profound approach to craftsmanship: “Whatever you do, do it with love.” This commitment to excellence reflects our and our family’s legacy as we take pride in our workmanship and pursue our passions.
From teaching practical skills like riding a bike or life-changing revelation about how to start a business from a passion to fixing a car to sharing wisdom about love, resilience, and integrity, fathers leave an indelible mark on their children’s hearts and minds. They provide a steady presence, offering a helping hand and a listening ear whenever needed.
“My dad has taught me a valuable lesson about knowing oneself and not conforming to others’ perceptions or expectations. I strive to embody this teaching by recognizing the power of purpose and the impact one can have on others. I truly believe that everyone has something unique to offer, and by investing energy into understanding and perfecting that thing, we can achieve true joy and success in life. This teaching has taken me far, and I plan to continue embracing it wholeheartedly.”

Fathers become the trusted confidants—the ones we turn to for advice, encouragement, and unwavering support.
Fatherhood and craftsmanship often intertwine, creating an unbreakable bond that transcends time and space. The values fathers embody through their work serve as the foundation of their relationships with their children, and their wisdom resonates throughout a lifetime.

For fathers who are craftsmen themselves, they understand that every project, like every child, is unique and requires patience, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn. They pass down this wisdom, teaching their children to take pride in their work and strive for excellence in everything they do.
“I’ve found that my career trajectory has closely mirrored my father’s, although it seems more like a subconscious choice than an intentional decision. Like my dad, I didn’t attend college, instead pursuing entrepreneurial ventures. Starting in high school, I worked to earn spending money, and that habit never stopped. When college didn’t pan out for me, I devoted my energy to entrepreneurial projects while working a day job. My father’s example taught me that taking a non-traditional path is okay. One can achieve a rewarding and fulfilling career with hard work and self-support.”—Joseph Humphreys.
In craftsmanship, the inheritance of a father’s influence is pivotal, guiding how we approach our professional lives. Born from the passion that fathers bring to their own work, this legacy helps us see things clearly, make informed decisions, and develop products that reflect our values.
“He is incredibly passionate about what he does for a living,” observes Shinola’s Senior Designer, Zachary Fox
“That passion helps me develop products that I am truly passionate about and want to use myself.”
The influence of fathers extends far beyond childhood and adolescence. Even as their children grow into adults and embark on their own journeys, fathers remain a constant source of strength, guidance, and friendship. The lessons they taught, the values they embodied, and the memories they created continue to shape their children’s lives, instilling a sense of purpose and meaning.
“I’ve always looked up to my father, and while nobody is perfect, having his unwavering love and support has been truly special to me. He’s not only the coolest guy I know but also a wonderful father who’s been a great influence in my new role as a dad. I’ve always admired his determination to build anything and his courage in trying to fix anything. And now, as I’m getting older, I’m also seeing the importance of spending time with family and empathizing with others, values that he has instilled in me.”—Zachary Fox.

As we strive to embody their wisdom, pass on their legacy, and continue to learn from the extraordinary role models they are, it is essential to honor their influence, forge our own path, and create a future filled with purpose, meaningful connections, and exquisite craftsmanship. In doing so, we keep the footsteps of fathers who have enriched our lives, giving future generations a heritage upon which they, too, can build.
